Groundwater Contamination in Noida’s Yamuna Floodplain Raises Safety Concerns

Groundwater contamination in parts of Noida’s Yamuna floodplain has raised concerns about drinking-water safety and environmental protection. According to a report by The Times of India published on 14 October 2026, Central Ground Water Board (CGWB) testing identified nitrate concentrations above the permissible drinking-water limit at certain locations in Gautam Buddha Nagar.

The reported 2025 samples recorded nitrate levels of up to 95.4 milligrams per litre at Choroli in the Jewar area, while another location recorded 74 milligrams per litre. The Bureau of Indian Standards’ permissible limit for nitrate in drinking water is 45 milligrams per litre.

Potential sources of nitrate pollution include untreated sewage, agricultural fertilisers and improper waste disposal. Excessive nitrate exposure can pose health risks, particularly to infants, making regular water-quality testing and appropriate treatment important.

The findings also highlight the importance of environmental monitoring as residential, industrial and infrastructure development continues across Noida and the Yamuna Expressway region.

Homebuyers should assess the availability and quality of drinking water, sewage-treatment arrangements and local civic infrastructure when evaluating a property. The reported contamination concerns specific groundwater sampling locations and should not be interpreted as evidence that every residential project or water supply in Noida is affected.
