While Man is a physical being with physical needs, Man is also a spiritual entity with spiritual needs. The Ancients of India well understood this as fact. They understood; every home should have a place set up specifically for prayers. If you are setting up a “Pooja Kaksh” or a prayer room, there are certain protocols that need to be followed, according to the Vastu Shastra.
In the olden days, the statues of the deities would be placed facing the North-East. However, idols and pictures should never face each other. Enough air should pass between the idols and pictures. They should be strategically placed so that they are few inches away from the walls and must be at a higher place. The feet of the idol need to be at chest level when you are seated to pray.
Pooja Kaksh or Room needs to produce a tranquil and meditative environment- an environment suitable for prayers. Therefore, selecting colours that are light, like light orange (Gerua), white, pale yellow etc. are excellent for your prayer room. Vastu Shastra advices that darker colours should always be avoided since they do not allow the free flow of concentration. A far as the Alter (Mandir) should preferably be made of marble or wood. Apart from this, Vastu suggests that photos of relatives who have passed away should be avoided. The Ancient Writ also suggests usage of copper vessels for collecting water. The pooja room must always be kept clean at all times. However, a dustbin must never be in the pooja room or near it.
The pooja room should be built keeping the entrance in the viewpoint. The entrance should have a threshold that should be a bit higher from the rest of the pooja room. The ceiling of the Pooja Room should in the shape of a Trikon (pyramid, Triangular). The havankund or the Agnikund should always be placed in the South-East corner.
Diyas and candles are the most authentic lightings that should always be used in your Pooja room. According to this Ancient text burning Ghee and oil lamps wards off negative energies. The lamps need to be placed in front of the idols facing south-east.
